Abacus HQ has moved!

We are excited to announce that we have a new home! Abacus has called Flatiron in NYC home for the last 4 years, but in May we changed addresses and are taking over Midtown! We wanted to share our new adventure and give you a look at our new space.

Is it crowded in here?

Three years ago, our 20th street office was spacious. It had everything we needed (and probably some things we didn’t): exposed brick, two conference rooms, an open kitchen, two showers, even a washer/dryer. The converted apartment was perfect —  cozy, homey, and a great place to dream up the next generation of expense management software. Then we grew. And grew. By the end of our time there, we were pretty crammed in. We had run out of desks and were using the hallway as another conference room. (There might have even been a meeting in the bathroom once….)

We loved our Flatiron office, but knew that we needed a change — namely, more elbow room.

Picking the right one

As we searched for our new office, we had a lot to take into consideration – amount of sunlight, number of conference rooms, employee commutes, lunch options. We wanted to make sure we had the right balance and ultimately found the perfect place in Midtown on 38th Street. It has lunch options galore, is walking distance to Bryant Park, and is close to subways and commuter trains. Our new office is full of light and offered a blank canvas for us to personalize and make into a home.

Make it work

Tim Gunn would be proud of what we created. As a member of our internal committee in charge of planning and designing our new space, I can honestly say that it was not an easy task, but one that was a lot of fun and very rewarding! Starting with an employee forum, we started with space planning, offering up 3 options to the co-founders, as well as a “theme” or design direction for the space.

Theme: NYC Roof Deck

 

One of the major pieces of feedback we got from the employee forum was creating a “homey” space that took advantage of the great sunlight. Plants were also a top request. It reminded us of nature or being outdoors, but we also wanted to honor our New York City roots. What’s more New York for outdoor space than a roof deck?!

We put together an inspiration board that we presented with our proposed plans. Ultimately, we selected the plan below to go with our theme.

Worth the work

Once we had the basics decided, we moved into executing our ideas. First on the list was painting! We turned our “Aba-blue” into paint for the main conference room and picked 3 shades of green for our smaller conference rooms.

 

Our designer Annie also painted an awesome mural in the lounge space!

After a week of accepting deliveries and putting together furniture, we moved in. Everyone loves the new space!
